Taking a CNA Certification Test

After you have completed a CNA training course that is approved by the State Board of Nursing, you will be ready to apply to take your certification test. Your paperwork will be filed by the instructor of your course with the board of nursing so that you can be added to a testing list. You will need to wait until you receive your written notice telling you when and where you will take your exam.

There will be two parts to your certification exam. One part will be the written portion based on the medical procedures and information you learned. There will also be questions with various scenarios of situations that you will encounter as a nursing assistant. Some questions will pertain to things like maintaining a patient's privacy and acting safely at all times.

The written portion of the test will usually take at least an hour and up to two hours. This test can have up to about 100 examination questions. Usually the exam is presented in multiple choice format. You can prepare for this portion of the test by using any books and study guides that you have from your training classes. It will probably take you anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to complete this test.

After everyone taking the certification exam that day completes the written test, you will be ready to move on to the skills portion. Each person will test individually for this part of the examination. You will need to practice several of the skills that you learned during your CNA Training. In most cases, you will be asked to demonstrate about 5 skills. Some of the tasks that you might be asked to model include: changing a patient's bed, taking vital signs, feeding a patient or repositioning a patient. Of course, you can be tested on anything that you learned during your CNA training.

During the skills test the examiner will be grading you on your performance. If you make a simple mistake, it might be the difference between passing or failing. This is why it is so important to take your time during the test. Do not allow your nervousness to trip you up during your examination.

You will need to pass both parts of the test in order to become a certified nursing assistant. If you do not pass the test, you will be instructed as to how and when you can retake the exam.

When you are preparing for your CNA certification test, you will want to study everything you learned during your training. You can use books, study guides and even tests from your class. You will also want to practice the various tasks that you will need to accomplish as a certified nursing assistant. This is when it can benefit you to ask a friend or loved one if you can "practice" some of those tasks on them. You might practice taking vital signs or even helping to feed a patient.

If you take your time during the test and are well prepared you are well on your way to becoming a nursing assistant.
